For the individual who is on the public stage all their challenges and lessons are placed before them in a magnified and exponentially heightened manner. The fact that I am writing a BLOG on someone I don’t know attests to this.
Fame is like a magnifying lens, not just because the famous are scrutinized for their every move, but because being famous increases all elements of an individual’s power, for good or ill. If the famous are not taught how to harness and direct this power, it can be like handling dynamite.
So was the case with Amy Winehouse.
Amy became a celebrated British singer-songwriter. Her unique and deep voice entranced millions. She became just as well known, though, for her offbeat and destructive lifestyle. The public watched this woman, who possessed unparalleled command and tone of her voice, fall into a spiral of self-destruction that could not be controlled.
How could a person so talented and gifted, with financial and career resources unlimited, destroy their lives?
It happens everyday, to people like you and me. It is easy to destroy our potential when we do not know the purpose of it.
Amy was born a powerful being. As a Virgo Lifepath 8 and Expression 8 she was placed in her body to master her own power, and to share it gracefully with others. Her father said that even as a young child she was very ‘self-willed.’ This will was no doubt an expression of her birthright, exhibited at a very young age. At 12 she was accepted to the prestigious Sylvia Young Theatre School because of her musical talent, only to be expelled for her rebelliousness.
Kind of adorable, really. Most 8’s innately desire to be in charge. This vibration is here to master their own leadership and power and may have the tendency to reject authority.
Amy no doubt knew on some level that she could become powerful and bright. The 8 can manifest and create money and success more naturally than other numbers. Yet this same power can be channeled into areas that feed into negativity and emotional turmoil.
Think about it. Power is one of the most difficult lessons of human kind. Just because we possess power, as Amy did, does not mean that we know what to do with it. Instead we may fall into the energy of the tyrant, the aggressor or even the victim who has no idea how to utilize our intense gifts.
“I know I’m talented, but I wasn’t put here to sing, I was put here to be a wife and a mom and look after my family,” Amy told Rolling Stone. Achieving what she did in her career was not enough. The fame, paparazzi and constant expectation from a elusive public crowded her sense of purpose. Instead of feeling that her gift was meaningful, it became a curse.
Drug and alcohol abuse became her primary forms of coping. She suffered from eating disorders and practiced self-mutilation; using her body as a conduit to express her resentment of what it could not give her. Her body gave her a voice that could manifest money, vocational success and drugs but her voice could not bring her happiness. No matter what she tried nothing from the physical world could ease her pain.
In her 9 personal year, a time when all the consequences and repercussions of ignoring our body’s deeper messages and purpose come to light, she passed away from a drug overdose.
What could have helped?
Ultimately I believe Amy died because the unbridled power she possessed took over her body.
It is like the stories of lottery winners who after being given loads of money fall into illness, depression and overwhelm; almost as though their body could not hold it all. Many recipients years later spent all of their millions and say that they were worse off.
The solution for this powerful 8 vibration is to remember:
- You are not the sole source of your power, you are a vehicle which is expressing it. You are connected to something deep and profound, and you must honor this relationship benevolently.
- Channel this energy through you and out into the world. Do not hold onto what you have in fear that it will be taken away or never come back to you. The 8 represents the flow of infinity – the more you let go, the more that comes back.
- Above all, focus on inner wealth and power. Getting caught up in the illusion of outward power (money, things, attractiveness, control of others) will only cut you off from the source that feeds you.
